In a village where everyone knows every road and every face, a child has suddenly disappeared.

Sequence I

The Village

By evening, the village felt cut off from the rest of the world. The road passed between old houses and disappeared into the darkness beyond the last streetlight. Tall trees stood against the night sky. A light October mist covered the distant roofs and courtyards.

Everyone here knew one another. An open door, a bicycle against a wall, or a voice from a courtyard usually belonged to someone familiar.

But that night, something was wrong. At the local police station, insects flew around the light outside. A frightened man hurried in, struggling to catch his breath.

The Complaint

The man stopped in front of Sub-Inspector Sanjay Singh’s desk. Fear showed clearly on his face. He spoke quickly, as if every second mattered.

His thirteen-year-old daughter was missing. No one had seen her since the previous evening.

Sanjay stayed quiet for a moment. The ceiling fan turned above them with a dry, uneven sound. An open register lay on the desk, ready for him to record the complaint.

The man was the younger brother of the village Sarpanch. His family lived in Delhi and had not visited their old village since 2019. They had returned about a month ago to stay with their relatives.

A month was enough to make the village feel familiar again. But it was not enough to know everything about it.

Sanjay asked the important questions and wrote down the answers. He did not make promises he could not keep. As soon as the complaint was complete, he closed the register, stood up, and prepared his team for the search.

A child had been missing for an entire night.

The Next Morning

Morning brought a pale, dusty light into the police station. The room looked tired. Papers were stacked against the walls, the desk was worn, and the chair opposite Sanjay was empty. The questions from the night were still unanswered.

Then Sanjay’s phone rang.

Someone had found a body near the village playground.

For a moment, the room became completely still. Sanjay listened, asked a few quick questions, and stood up. Everyone understood why the location mattered. There was no time to waste.

Within minutes, Sanjay and his team were on their way. The same road they had searched at night now led them towards the playground.

Near the playground, something had been found.
An empty rural playground with old swings, police officers, and villagers behind a boundary.

The Playground

The playground was empty when the police arrived, but villagers had gathered behind its low wall. They kept their distance, yet leaned forward to see. No child went near the swings.

Sanjay walked across the dusty ground with his officers. The old swing stood still. Beyond it, several closed gunny sacks lay on the ground.

The officers blocked off the area and carefully moved closer. They did not show the crowd what was inside the sacks. They did not have to. The faces of the nearest officers told everyone that something terrible had happened.

The remains belonged to a young girl. Her body had been cut into three parts and placed inside the sacks.

The missing thirteen-year-old girl was identified as the victim.

She was the Sarpanch’s niece, the daughter of the man who had come to Sanjay the night before and asked him to find her.

The search had become a murder investigation.

The Aftermath

When the father learned the truth, his legs seemed to lose their strength. He broke down near the playground while the police continued their work.

There was nothing Sanjay could say to change what had happened. The police now had to protect the scene, collect evidence, and speak to witnesses. But for the father, none of that mattered. His daughter was gone.

The remains were sent for a post-mortem examination. The police vehicle slowly left the playground, carrying the first pieces of a case the village could not explain.

By then, the news had spread. It moved from one home to another and along the same roads the police had searched only hours earlier.

Parents called their children inside. People lowered their voices when strangers walked past. Doors that usually stayed open were closed before evening.

The village had woken to a death. By night, it had learned to be afraid.

And fear spread through the village.
