The Witnesses

Bihar · October 2026

The old case was alive again. But the new murder still had no witness.

Sequence I

The Questions

Sanjay closed the old file and returned to the new case.

He started with the playground. Who had been near it on the night the girl disappeared? Who had crossed the nearby fields? Had anyone heard a voice, a vehicle, or a dog barking?

The police went from house to house. They spoke to farmers, shopkeepers, guards, and people who lived near the road.

Most had seen nothing. Some had gone to bed early. Others were too afraid to speak.

Then Raghuvir found two young men who had been near the field that night.

Sequence II

Rohan and Ravi

Their names were Rohan and Ravi. Both lived in the village and had no work.

At first, they said they knew nothing. Sanjay watched them in silence. Rohan kept looking at the floor. Ravi could not keep his hands still.

“You were near the field that night,” Sanjay said. “Tell me what you saw.”

The two men looked at each other. Then Rohan admitted that they had been drinking there. They had stayed quiet because they were afraid the police would punish them.

But while they were hiding near the field, they had seen someone.

Two frightened men had seen the killer in the dark.

Sequence III

A Figure in the Dark

The night had been very dark. Rohan and Ravi could not see the person’s face.

They saw only a shadow moving across the field. The person was dragging a large, closed gunny sack along the ground.

The shadow moved toward the playground. A short time later, it walked away without the sack.

Sanjay asked them to describe everything: the person’s height, clothes, and voice.

They remembered none of it clearly.

Then Ravi stopped speaking. There was one thing he had not forgotten.

The next few days

Sanjay and Raghuvir question village men while checking a lead about a limp.

Sequence IV

The Limp

“He was not walking properly, sir,” Ravi said. “One leg was weak. He was limping.”

It was the strongest lead Sanjay had.

The police began searching the village. They looked for men with old leg injuries or a permanent limp. They checked the nearby villages too.

Several men were brought in for questioning. Sanjay checked where each man had been on the night of the murder.

One had hurt his foot at work. Another had walked with a limp since childhood. A third had recently fallen from a bicycle.

None of them could be connected to the playground or the girl.

For the first time, the killer seemed to have a shape.

Sequence V

A Dead End

Days passed.

Every name was checked. Every story was tested. Nothing led back to the crime.

Rohan and Ravi were questioned again, but their answer stayed the same. It had been too dark. They had seen no face. They had heard no voice.

Late at night, Sanjay sat alone with the old files and the new witness statements spread across his desk.

The limp was real. The man with the limp was still missing.

The witnesses had given Sanjay a direction. It led nowhere.
